How does our donation process work?

A key component of our work at Lotus House Women’s Shelter is our Lotus House Thrift center, which serves not only as a resource hub but also as one of our primary internship and job training sites, further supporting their path toward independence. Through our retail program, women in the shelter gain hands-on experience in customer service, merchandising, inventory management, and daily store operations. Helping them build confidence, develop practical skills, and strengthen their resumes as they prepare for employment. Many of the individuals staffed at our thrift center are alumni of the shelter, creating a full-circle model where those who have completed the program return as team members, further supporting and inspiring others on a similar path.

In terms of clothing donations, we take a very intentional and impactful approach. Through our thrift donation center, every item we receive is carefully sorted and assessed by our team. We work closely with our resource coordinators at the shelter, who identify the most immediate and specific clothing needs of our guests. Based on this, we curate personalized distributions to ensure each woman and child receives items that directly support their day-to-day needs and next steps as they transition out of the shelter. Whether that be securing clothing for work or school, or obtaining essential items to help furnish and settle into their new home.

Items that are not immediately needed are then made available through our thrift side, where they continue to serve a meaningful purpose. Proceeds from purchases directly support our shelter and help fund critical programs and services. This full-circle model allows us to maximize the impact of every donation, ensuring transparency, sustainability, and direct benefit to the community we serve.
